Fayette County, Illinois Courthouse & Jail Project
On April 1st, Fayette County will vote YES or NO on a 1.0% sales tax to fund the construction of a new Government Center. This would replace the current Fayette County Courthouse & Jail, which cannot be renovated to meet the needs of today and tomorrow.

Current Fayette County Courthouse & Jail Complex
In early 2024, the Fayette County Public Building Commission retained an architect to evaluate the condition of the current Courthouse & Jail and opportunities for renovation.
The current Courthouse was built as a residential home in 1839, then purchased by Fayette County in 1932.
Multiple additions over decades have created a confusing, inefficient 44,400 square foot layout.
The last major building project was the additional of the County Jail in 1968 with 34 beds and support spaces; housing was later increased to 70 beds but support spaces were not increased.
The Courthouse & Jail Complex has no room for expansion on its current site.
There have been no significant changes to the layout or spaces provided in over 30 years.
The only ADA-compliant path to public offices on the second floor takes visitors through a Courtroom, which is sometimes mid-trial.
The building has severe mold in several ceilings and walls, regular plumbing leaks, and severely outdated wiring.
The Courthouse basement floods during heavy rain despite previous repairs, which limits how much of the space can be used.
Proposed Fayette County Government Center
A new Government Center would keep government functions under one roof while providing a facility that is equipped for today’s needs but also sets the community up for tomorrow. The proposed Fayette County Government Center would include these important functions:
Circuit Clerk
County Board
County Clerk & Recorder
County Coroner
County Detention Center
County Sheriff
County Treasurer
Courtrooms
Emergency Management Agency (EMA)
Probation Office
Public Defender
State’s Attorney
Supervisor of Assessments
